This is one of those challenges that I would have gone out and shot images for. However, today we arrived home from a week on the Isle of Wight, UK where I’ve been busy with the camera. So, these are all new images and fit the brief.
In Anne’s original post she asked us to post examples of where we’ve had to move ourselves to get an image rather than relying on a zoom lens to change the perspective. I normally shoot with prime lenses moving my body, rather than the lens barrel, is part of my normal shooting style. Ironically, I did use a new Sony 24-105mm during the past week, mainly because I haven’t used it that much. It was also a bit lighter to carry on some long hikes.
So, here are a collection of images, all taken during our stay on the island. The first batch are a row of colourful deckchairs I was drawn to. We saw them displayed along the promenade at Sandown. We got talking to the cafe owner who operated them and he told us he’d put them out to dry before putting them away for the winter.
I had two vintage lenses with me, a Nikon 35mm and Nikon 105mm. It was a long walking day and those two lenses are heavy enough. I also had my Sony RX100 MK6 which I carry as the 24mm-200mm zoom is handy from time to time. I’m not one of those photographers who always see’s the best shot straight away. I’ll recognise that a scene has something, but I do walk around and try different angles before later evaluating the pictures I’ve captured once I get them onto the computer.
The last two images will be great for a print or uploading to Photos4Me. I wish I’d had my 28mm lens with me and I made sure it was in my bag for the rest of the week, despite the extra weight. The following images were taken with my new Sony zoom but I did move around with it to get some alternative images. These were taken in Shanklin.
I finish with some images I took on Yaverland Beach. It was close to where we were staying and is one of the best beaches in the UK for fossil hunting. I’d also seen an abandoned boat on the far side of the beach I was keen to photograph. Again, I was using the Sony zoom but I was shifting positions to get these images.

Steve, you certainly moved your body to get these images. You definitely had to walk forward, backward and around to get the beach chairs. My favorite is the angled shot. Your fossil hunting also had you moving around. Lastly you walked to the water’s edge to get a different view of the boat. Well done!
