Lens-Artist Challenge #414 – Harmony

Ann-Christine hosts this weeks Lens Artist Challenge – Harmony. The original challenge post concentrated on colour harmonies but Ann has granted us more freedom in our what we perceive to be an image demonstrating harmony.

I don’t get on so well with what I initially thought was a more conceptual challenge. Since joining in with the Lens-Artists challenges it is something I’m trying to bear in mind when I’m out with my camera. Before thinking of images for this challenge I Googled the definition of harmony. Google gave me these definitions:

  • Agreement: A state of peaceful existence, accord, or getting along well with others.
  • Balance: A pleasing arrangement or congruity of different elements, such as colors in art or design.
  • Synonyms: Accord, concord, peace, and compatibility.

So, based on the Google definition above, which pretty much echo the choices Ann suggested in here original post, here are my challenge images:

Agreement: Getting along with others in peaceful accord. I took this ‘Street Shot’ a long time ago. I’ve always really liked it although I’ve lost the original on a corrupt CD disk. The girls were in deep conversation at the time. As I watched them it was obvious the girl on the right was just being a really good listener for a friend. I love the look of empathy on her face.
Colour Harmony – The art of choosing and combining colors in a way that looks balanced, attractive, and pleasing to the eye. Images that contain one colour or shades of the same colour or colours that lie next to each other on the colour wheel.
Agreement. During my time shooting weddings Steve, here on the left, asked me if I would be able to shoot his Civil Ceremony Marriage to his partner Derek. I didn’t hesitate in saying yes and, as it turned out, it was one of the most enjoyable weddings I photographed. However I’d never shot a civil ceremony before and, going into it, I was a bit nervous because I knew I couldn’t use my usual couple poses. As it turned out everything worked out fine. I had a great time and I was really pleased to provide Steve and Derek with a few pictures I was really proud of, this one probably being my favourite from that day.
Here are two guys working in total harmony painting the outside wall of this hotel. They had to be close enough to overlap each others work but not so close they collided into each other. All that whilst controlling their descent on a rope one handed – Brilliant. Harmony in the colours here as well.
Musical Harmony: These actors were singing together, in harmony, during this outdoor performance of a play in France.

Having worked my way through the challenge it wasn’t quite as conceptual as I thought. Some of it was but not all. Realising how colours, close to each other on the colour wheel harmonise was something I’d never considered in the past. Ironically, we’ve decorated our home using colours that compliment each other in this harmonious way without really thinking about why we’ve done that. It’s just to our taste and easy on the eye. I’ve always gone looking for the vivid, clashing colours with my camera, opposites on the colour wheel.
